Student Counseling Services
Student Counseling Services (SCS) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) promotes the mental health and wellness of UMMC students across all degree programs. The services at SCS are tailored to the individual student as they work toward their academic and career goals at UMMC.
Student Counseling Services works with clients on a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to, stress management, depression, anxiety and adjustment to a new environment (e.g., school, city, degree program). The SCS staff aim to create a welcoming atmosphere for all students by respecting and affirming individual and cultural differences, and encourage students to schedule an appointment to talk with a counselor about any problems they are encountering.
Appointments
New or returning student clients may contact SCS by email at scs@umc.edu or by phone at (601) 815-4971 to schedule an appointment or consult with a counselor.
Confidentiality
With only a few exceptions that are allowed by law, the services student clients receive at SCS will be kept confidential. No UMMC personnel outside of SCS will have access to any information student clients provide during their appointment(s).
Services
Student Counseling Services offers two main services:
- supportive counseling and
- evidence-based therapy.
When student clients meet with a counselor, they will discuss which of these services would be the best fit. During the appointment, the counselor will also establish an appointment plan and timeline that covers the frequency and number of appointments student clients should expect to receive.
For more information about SCS appointments, appointment forms, and our no-show and cancellation policy, please refer to the SCS Student Manual.
FAQs
- Is there a fee? Student Counseling Services are provided to all UMMC students free of charge, regardless of how many times student clients visit. However, SCS does not provide free treatment to any visiting students who are, for example, doing a rotation at UMMC.
- What should I expect during my first visit? The main goal of a student clients' first visit is for their counselor to understand the reasons they have made the appointment and what goals they hope to accomplish during their appointments. The initial appointment is mainly for the student clients' counselor to get to know them better and the appointments to follow will be more therapeutic in nature. Students are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes early to their initial visit to complete the necessary paperwork.
- Who can use Student Counseling Services? All UMMC students, regardless of their school (e.g., School of Nursing, School of Medicine, John D. Bower School of Population Health) are eligible to use the SCS services.
- Can I be prescribed medication? Student Counseling Services does not prescribe medications.
- Do you provide ADHD evaluations? The SCS does not provide ADHD evaluations. If this is something a student client is interested in, their counselor can work with them to identify a community resource for this.
